When your skin stretches or shrinks beyond a certain extent, it causes the elastin and collagen in the skin to break and lose their structural integrity. The role of elastin is to allow the skin to stretch and collagen’s main role is to provide strength and support to your skin. As your skin heals, stretch marks appear in the areas where elastin is disrupted.

    How are stretch marks treated?

In general treating stretch marks helps to improve the appearance of stretch marks, however, it can be challenging. Taking care of your stretch marks at the earliest gives the best results. When the stretch marks get older and deeper, they become more challenging to treat.

    Treatment options include:

    Laser Skin Resurfacing

    • When small areas are being treated, a local anaesthetic will be administered.
    • When a larger area is treated, general anaesthesia is used at the surgeon’s discretion
    • A sedative may be used to keep you relaxed through the procedure
    • The surgeon will select the laser type that is most suited for your skin type and marks
    • The procedure is carried out by exposing the skin surface to laser
    • Treating smaller areas may take about 30-45 minutes
    • The Ablative type of laser skin resurfacing may require a lesser number of sessions, while the Non-ablative procedure may need more sessions for completing the treatment.

    Dermabrasion

Dermabrasion is a surgical procedure in which a specialized instrument is used. This scrapes away the stretch marks and improves your skin contour

    • Your doctor will give you local anaesthesia to numb your skin to make you comfortable
    • The area to be treated is cleaned with an antiseptic gel
    • Your doctor will move the dermabrader or the wand along your skin.
    • This removes the superficial layers of the top layer of the skin with the dead cells. Depending on the extent of the skin being treated, it may take about 30 minutes to an hour or more.
    • Following the dermabrasion, your doctor will bandage the treated area with a moist medicated bandage
    •  This is done to prevent your skin from cracking and thereby delaying healing.
    • You must keep the bandage on all through the day until you go in for follow up
    • You will be able to go home immediately following the procedure

    Microneedling

    • During the process of microneedling, your aesthetic specialist will poke your skin with micro-sized needles. These micropunctures stimulate the growth of new collagen and elastin from inside the body to create newer skin.
    • You may need anywhere between three and six treatments to see desired results.
    • It is also called “Collagen Induction Therapy” as it induces the formation of new collagen and facilitates the elimination of unwanted stretch marks.

    Topical Application Creams

    • Skin creams prescribed by your doctor for stretch marks contain vitamin A and retinoids such as tretinoin.
    • These ingredients help to improve the appearance of stretch marks in the early phases.
    • Tretinoin helps to rebuild called collagen, thus making the stretch marks look more like your normal skin.

Do stretch marks go away permanently?

Stretch marks become less obvious with the right treatment at the right time. It is always best to consult a dermatologist to decide upon the right treatment for you depending on your skin and the extent of stretch marks. You must follow all post-care instructions to see desired results
