Under-eye Dark Circles

Periorbital darkening, more commonly known as dark circles, is concerning to many of us. They can be caused by several external as well as physical factors. They make your face appear tired and dull and may affect your confidence levels.

They are more commonly seen in adults and may not be permanent. The prominence of dark circles occurs as we age owing to the thinning of skin and loss of collagen volume. Depending on your skin tone, the dark circles can vary in colour from purple to dark brown.

    What causes Dark Circles?

There are several reasons why dark circles appear:

Fatigue– The lack of sleep causes fluid to build up under your eyes and causes them to puff up.

Age – Natural ageing causes your skin to thin and depletion in collagen and fat is another common reason for dark circles beneath your eyes. This makes the skin loses its elasticity and the blood vessels become more visible.

Eye Strain– Eye strain causes the blood vessels around your eyes to enlarge and the skin surrounding your eyes to darken causing the dark circles to disappear.

Allergies– An allergic reaction triggers the release of histamines that cause your blood vessels to dilate and become more prominent under the skin.

Sun Overexposure – Excessive sun exposure causes the increased production of melanin and can cause hyperpigmentation in the area to darken

Medical Conditions – Certain medical conditions such as anaemia, thyroid disease etc can also contribute to dark circles under the eyes.

    Treatments for Dark Circles:

    a. Skin Lightening Creams

To lighten the dark circles under the eyes, your dermatologist may recommend a lightening cream containing ingredients such as azelaic acid, kolic acid, glycolic acid etc

    b. Laser therapy:

It is one of the most effective treatments for undereye dark circles and two types of lasers are primarily used- “Ablative” and “Non-Ablative lasers”. Based on their intensity the types of laser are chosen. Laser treatment has a high degree of specificity and particular wavelengths are supposed to be used depending upon how the skin absorbs it.

    • Pulsed dye or Diode Laser: It is the least invasive and extremely safe. Based on parameters such as wavelength, pulse, and radiant exposure, dark circles may be treated accordingly

    • Carbon Dioxide Laser: It helps in collagen production and eventually firms the skin. This rarely causes any kind of blistering and permanent scarring.

    • Fractional Laser: In this type of laser, smaller areas of the skin are treated with heat to enhance collagen production and the body tries to seal the damage. This leaves the surrounding tissues untouched. It is very effective in conditions such as melasma.

    • Q-switched Lasers: Both heat, as well as light energy, are used in a concentrated fashion on a specific area to damage it, leaving the surrounding areas unaffected.

    c. Chemical Peels

It is a procedure in which mild chemicals are applied over the skin causing the uppermost layer of the skin to peel away and the newer skin grows to be more precise and smoother. Acids such as glycolic acid, trichloroacetic acid, salicylic acid etc are used.

Two types of peels are used to treat under-eye circles:

    • Superficial Peel: Also known as the lunchtime peel, it is used for the treatment of rough skin and mild dark circles. Mild acid is made to penetrate only the superficial layer of the skin.

    • Medium Peel: This type of peel is used for exfoliation of the skin’s middle layers by using glycolic acid.

    d. Fat Transplant Procedures:

Given that dark circles are caused due to thinning of the under-eye skin, autologous fat transplantation is a great way to balance it. The procedure involves using the patient’s body fat to plump up the under-eye area.

    e. Fillers

Fillers are used as an option when the soft skin under the eye thins out and contribute to the formation of dark circles. The injections of platelet-rich plasma or hyaluronic acid gel under the eyes render a younger appearance with the formation of new fatty tissues.

Fillers are a good choice for those who lack volume under the eyes. With age, the fatty areas lose volume causing the under-eye skin to look hollow. A filler tackles this by offering a natural lift and smooth aesthetic transition between the eye and upper cheek areas.

    f. Blepharoplasty

Lower-eyelid surgery, also known as blepharoplasty, is one of the most effective ways to treat baggy eyelids and dark circles. It is a great way to fine-tune the shape of the lower eyelid and how light falls over the area.

An incision is made in the lower lash line and any excess fat from the area is removed If deemed necessary, some excess skin and tightening of the muscles are also done in the under-eye area.

Once the area is bag free, there is no possibility of the shadows that played a part in causing the under-eye circles
